You mean lately? I could be wrong, but was there really any "talk about anything" radio before he came on the air?

No, I'm talking about his whole career. I mean, I know he had balls back then, and would do things like blackface on Arsenio Hall and stuff. Was America really just easily amused at anything different?

He did bring a new type of radio to the audience. There was talk radio, but never anything quite like what Howard did. No 1000 channel TV universe. No internet. What he did was stop doing "format" radio. No more talk for 30 seconds, giving the weather and traffic every break, then play a song, followed by commercials. he just talked, and did bits. He used everyday people and put them on the air and they made it funny. You couldn't find what he was doing anywhere.

It's not new anymore, but back then it was something no one had ever heard before.

Today, he's out of ideas, doesn't work on new ideas, and certainly doesn't hire anyone to do any writing, other than Benji. He's old, and he's resigned himself to be a rich old fart who wants to be loved by middle American seniors on TV.

That wasn't when he promised us the revolution though.

    I'm gonna expand this...

Howard was a great ring master. When he had Billy and Jackie's lightning fast wit along with Fred's sound effects Howard was number 1. He was delivering a fresh product every day. Now that everyone but a much older and slower fred are gone so is Howard's ability to be the ringmaster. Howard has never been funny on his own. How do we know this, funny people don't become unfunny. Only those that were never funny become exposed over time. This is what has happened to Howard. Benjy tries, but he doesn't have the chops to go at someone live. He needs to set up scenarios to amuse. Sure he gets off a good one occasionally, but no where's near the level of Jackie or Billy or even Stuttering John. Artie was very good at it as well, but we have seen what happened during the show then, and since, Artie was canned.

Fair enough. I just can't believe he got so big when I hear his old shows. They are painful. I personally only enjoyed the Artie years.

He invented saying "anal" and "oral" on the radio instead of anal sex and oral sex.

He was legitimately a pioneer in what we now know is Fake Reality radio and television, which has gone on to dominate the world.

He was one of the first to give his listeners the illusion that they had access to the real lives and interactions of his staff.

It really felt different, even if it was just as contrived as any stage drama.
