Heard a couple of guys on a podcast mention this in passing, I'm not sure what they meant or if it's even still a thing these days. They were reminiscing about the Northeast, though I assume things would be similar in the upper Midwest.

So is a "winter car" a solid 4WD drive vehicle to handle the elements, or is it a beater car you drive in bad conditions because you don't give a shit what happens to it?

...yeah you have the idea. in the winter a lot of guys keep their nicer cars garaged plus in the northeast they use salt on the roads and that promotes rust. you can drive a rusted out 4wd subaru to get around.

Lots of people here get winter tires on their car in the winter.

    Either or both.
When I was younger I had an old used Cutlass beater that was my winter car.
These days it's a solid all-wheel-drive vehicle that I bought new.
A lot depends on where you live what you need and where you have to go

In Southern, Ontario we use a lot of salt in the winter and a winter car is an old rusted beater with winter tires. Use to be more common to own a winter when I wad kid in the 80's, not so much now. Further north they use studded tires, but they don't salt the roads because its too cold for the salt to work, so I don't think many people would bother with a winter car..

OK, this was Bill Burr and Doug Stanhope I heard talking about Boston. I had visions of busted out sedans from he early 90s filling the roads in February.

...fuck it in germany its snows and i see people in europe on youtube driving their mercedes cars even diesels with 3 feet of snow on them. i used to get snow tires when i lived in tahoe but i have all season tires mud and snow m/s. if we get too much snow i put on my winter gear and walk to the store which isnt too far and i love it. people around here are terrible when they drive in the snow. they think because they have a 4wd subaru or ford eplorer you can just barrel down the road at the speed limit because you have 4wd.

I live in a winter resort ski town, every weekend I see city people in their SUV's stuck in a ditch off the side of the road here. Always a 4WD SUV!

Also known as a "beater". A car you can beat up on.

Winter cars from what i've seen and talked to people, its also a DD (daily driver). Pick up trucks, suvs, a sedan, just make sure you got good tires. My neighbour has a truck he drives all year round, and a corvette that he drives in the summer.

Wish I had the marples for 2 cars. One all year round and other just for the summer cruises.

As I get older, I just stay home when it snows. It isn't worth wreaking my car. I'm my own boss, so I can do it.

This. I had a Subaru with holes in the floorboards that I used about 4 or 5 months a year. It's gone now and I really need another.

I live at the base of a small mountain. Down the road from me, every year there are like 4 or 5 old Jeeps and such parked at the bottom of this one street. People leave their cars there at night and take the Jeeps to their 5 million dollar homes at the top.
