And why is Swiss, for that matter?
i wouldn't doubt people here have put jarred tomato sauce on a chicken patty w/ american cheese.

Why is it called Chicken Parmesan and not be made with Parmesan cheese?
There's both. Usually chicken parm is made with mozzarella and grated parmesan.
The only thing American cheese is good for is a lazy grilled cheese sandwich.
well you could mix fontina with the mozz since melted fontina would give it that pully-strecthy consistency, and if you want to give it a smoky touch i would mix in a little gruyere or smoked guda. there's nothing wrong with a blend to make it more interesting than simple mozz.
american cheese isn't really good for anything; its like adding velveta.
American is good on burgers too, and I like it on homemade subs, Not processed slices, real American cheese from the deli like land o lakes. White American is good too.
I like American on those, but also cheesesteaks.
It probably should be called parmigiana. IMO.
