We are moving and are thinking about dropping our home phone and going to cell phones only but I still like the idea of having a home phone in addition to our cellphones. My wife says that I'm old because and no one under 30 has a home phone anymore .
Well, I'm not under 30 but I do like saving $50 a month so I'm torn.

    What does everyone here have??

Howard related because you know he has a landline but wants to save on the monthly bill

The only reason we have a landline is that it's part of a Comcast/Xfinity Triple play package. We'd pay the same amount with or without the landline so we're keeping it for now or until our rates go up. We never use it though.

We lose power a lot up here. When we do, sometimes the cellphone doesn't work. I have an old fashion hard. Wired phone. That works better when the power goes out.

I have both just because we like having a common number for the household. But I'm sick of paying for it when it hardly gets used. I'm going to get something like the Google phone. Pay for equipment of some sort once and then be done.

Do you have a compelling reason to need a land line other than the fact you've always had one? The only reason I could see getting one is if you live in an area that might see a lot of severe weather or some other situation that would make having a backup form of communication a reasonable idea. And Comcast/Xfinity doesn't count for that, as they use the cable lines and the internet which would go out before the usually buried telephone lines.

Other than that, I can't really think of a reason to keep a land line. Even dead areas for cell coverage can get femtocells from their provider that will give you coverage in your house.

No reason I've just always had one.
We're moving to the Red Neck Riviera (Myrtle Beach) Murrells Inlet actually and the cell coverage is great there.

I have Sprint cell service, and it sucks around my house, so I've kept the landline, even though I use it for 3-4 calls / month and it costs $20-30.

I'd like to point out $20-30 a month is $240 to $360 per year. That's a lot for a back up.

I have a land line thru Verizon package. Just basic service. No long distance or call waiting, etc.
    I'm thinking I pay less than $20/month.

I just recently dropped ATT cell. was paying $85+ per month with limited text/data and mediocre service.
Picked up a Boost mobile package for $35/mo. Unlimited calls/text/data.
For my needs, it does the job.
Savings will be over$600 a year.

The only reason to have a home phone is to help keep solicitors employed.

Fuck, I'm angry that I still get snail mail.

Magic Jack and a Cell Phone. Only internet at the house. I imagine this is available through the major phone companies (I never took the time to figure it out), but with the Magic Jack I get emails with the phone messages as attachments, and call forwarding is easy to turn on and off.

Friends get the cell number, others the MJ.

Just got rid of land line and switched from Verizon to T Mobile. With Verizon I had 2 cell phones with 700 shared talk and text minutes, T Mobile 2 cells unlimited talk and text and 4G data for about $60 less a month. No noticeable coverage problems, very happy so far.

i've lived through enough multi-day power outage events (storms, ice) to never give up a hard line phone. cell phones are super-de-duper til you cant recharge the damn things or the towers are out of commision
