If it's just for fun, get the Air. If you need to do work, get the MacBook.

if you are only going to either have 1 tablet or 1 laptop, go with the laptop.

if you already have a decent laptop, go with the ipad air.

I have a iMac I use when I'm at home, in my office. I have a work ipad and laptop that I only use for work. Then I have an ipad with Retina that I use when I'm mobile.

The problem I have is when I travel, the ipad doesn't let me watch sports from websites because I can't get a compatible player to watch them. Also, I find typing on a ipad a pain in the ass. On the flip side, when I travel, I have to take my work ipad, and carrying a laptop also in my carry on is kind of a pain. On the plus for the ipad, is if I'm reading in bed, the ipad is easier to read my kindle books than on a laptop.

If I hook up a bluetooth keyboard to my ipad (which I have but never use) then I may as well have a laptop.

this has been a conundrum for me in the last 3 years. I have switched back and forth several times now

I will never buy a PC. I have one for work and it sucks shit. My GF has one and it constantly gives her
    problems.

Mo offense. Don't want this to turn into a PC vs Mac thread. I'm a mac guy since 2002

depends upon what you plan to do with either machine. i've taken my macbook and ipad on trips and never used the macbook. at home i use my mac pro for 99% of my tasks.

my Dell is 3 years old and isn't outdated; 8GB memory, i7 processor, SSD, etc.

plenty of free anti-malware solutions too

I like the Macbook but for the money you can get better performance from a PC based laptop
