I am having a ridiculous conversation with some young kid who claims Rover is the greatest radio personality ever. For those who don't know who that is (which I am sure most don't) he is a guy here in Cleveland that replaced Howard. They actually tried syndicating his show in the Midwest in 2006 when Howard left but he failed miserably but he's still on in Cleveland. Anyways, the kid is trying to compare his numbers to Howard saying they are/were better. Anyone know where I can find that information? I tried google but I can't find any hard numbers.

I remember when Rover took over for Howard. Doesn't he do a wigger Eminem-esque schtick?

I always heard 18 million in the 90's but I don't have any proof of that being correct.

seems Howard "Sternified" his numbers to bring himself up to Limbaugh who was a BEAST in 1993

Stern Couldn't approach Limbaugh in numbers I'm splitting the difference 4+17 / 2

    10.5 million at his peak.

Damn that's pretty impressive. I wonder what Howards numbers would have looked like if he was on 600+ stations...

As for Stern, somewhere between 4 million (according to the radio-rating company Arbitron, which may underestimate listeners to controversial shows such as Stern’s) and 16 million (according to Stern’s camp) listen to him on the radio

Between 4 and 16 is a pretty wide swing. That leads me to believe it was 4 million at the most

The few times I've listened it's an exact copy of the Stern show from the good old days.

Robin, I was #1 in markets that I didn't even know I was in. I rolled through Europe like the Nazis in World War 2.

Limbaugh now claims 20 million listeners (what does Arbitron say?)

16 million (according to Stern’s camp) (Arbitron says 4 million)

I'm not defending Howard here but, Howard was on 15 stations at his peak and Rush was on over 600.

600 stations is pretty good saturation.

Plus, I didn't see Arbitrons numbers for Rush, it's just what Rush claimed (20M) versus what Howard claimed (16M) the only real numbers I saw were Arbitrons 4M for Howard.

Unlike present day, Buchwald wasn't feared back then and the national press was much more against Howard than for him. His governor bluff/run, the movie, the funerals in philly/cleveland, etc... He was fucking huge. The show in the 90s is better than any tv/radio/movie project I have ever heard. At one time, he really was the king of all media.

Rush had more listeners thanks to a watered down product but the majority of his audience were irrelevant seniors.

The only guy I ever heard do anything close to a good show in the style of Howard was Kidd Chris. He got thrown off the air for a racist song parody contest at the beginning of the PC faggotry wave that took over the world 10 or so years ago.

Howard had eye of the tiger back in the 90's. Now he has eye of the kitten.

Nothing can beat Stern from when he was in his prime. I look at him now like an athlete who waited too long to retire. I'm not mad at him, I just wish he would have done it sooner...like at the end of Sirius contract #1.

Oh lord - Rover. I was in one of his post-Stern markets. Sure, we've found out a lot of the Stern shenanigans were not what they appeared to be on the outside, but at least there was an air of reality to the presentation. The stunts and schtick on Rover's show seem to have grown worse since we had him in syndication. Back in 06/07, he had his co-horts doing stupid "Jackass"-like material, coupled with typical FM talk about guy stuff. Based on the website, his show today looks more put upon than pro wrestling.

Exactly. Even is Rush did have 20 million and Howie had 4, considering the difference in syndication outlets, 4m is pretty impressive for 15 stations.
