When the final curtain closes and history looks back on Howard Stern. What will be written about him?

I dunno how old most of you are but I'll assume I'm generally younger. Growing up, even when he was on FM radio at #1 in my area, even when he was on E! television every night, to other teenagers I knew he was just that creepy old guy oogling trashy porn stars and coaxing C-celebrities like Courtney Love to take their top off.

I'd try to explain his greater relevance to pop culture, but nobody who didn't already listen to the radio show ever bought it. Very much of a "roll eyes" when you mention him legacy, even before obscurity.

I think there will have to be two parts written.

    1. His fight against censorship on the radio and the changing of pop culture.
    2. Him selling out and turning into the very thing he fought against in the first half.

    It will not be easy.

Now that we know Howard really isn't opposed to censorship (when it's coming from him) and only fought the FCC because he wouldn't have a career without fart and dick jokes, he won't even be able to claim that as part of his legacy.

He's going to be remembered (and quickly forgotten) as a radio version of Jerry Springer - someone with a pathological need for fame and money but with no talent to back it up, who resorted to whatever exploitation and shameless self-promotion was necessary to make a buck.

Any notion that he was ever actually some kind of humorist went out the door with Jackie and Artie.

As much as I hate to say it, I think you're closest to the truth.

You simply cannot have a favorable legacy without a group of people to remember you fondly. Day after day, Howard drives away thousands (or maybe hundreds by now) of fans that stuck with him through all of those fake radio wars, product placement campaigns and radio bits for the past 30 years. He isn't replacing this audience, who are moving on -- some might say evolving -- to forms of entertainment that don't result in a self-inflicted golden shower.

The true irony lies in his latest venture to gain acceptance by the mainstream, which is forcing him more and more into obscurity. The third place trophy wife is even more of a fame whore, but without the talent, and I can only imagine how much she grates on him when they're stuck together in that fortress of solitude.

The former captain of the guard said it best... Howard has a box to keep himself in and men to bury him.

Good night funny man... I have moved on, and accepted your decision.

How many listeners does he currently have? I think he is not relevant to today's young people and he will be forgotten.
