In my position, I have to sometimes "manage out" people. My HR department at the time was really big on documentation so I had many corrective action docs and emails on a specific individual's poor performance. I decided to send each incident in a separate email to my HR Director with me on bcc. Well I don't think I got more than 3 or 4 emails into the process, where instead of copying myself for filing, I started copying the actual INDIVIDUAL himself on the emails. At least a dozen were sent and when I sent the last one, I realized what I did and wanted to crawl under my desk. 10 minutes later, here comes the individual into my office with a stack of printed emails demanding to know what this is all about. I quickly back-peddled and said, "John, we have been talking about your performance for some time now and I just wanted everything to be out in the open on my decision to get HR involved". I don't think he really bought it but at least I had an answer. I can come up with more screw-ups in my illustrious career but this was the 1st to come to mind. What are some of your cringe-worthy fuck-ups that you wish you could go back in time and change?
