Thumb + Middle finger (Clench) while exposed index for easy finger tapping

Thumb + Index + Middle for less movement (3 fingers)

So many different techniques out there, i've tired all of the above and more. For a few months i've been stuck on the closed fist position but it's so tricky to palm mute cause your fingers aren't open so your palm doesn't rest on all the high strings.

Anyone has this technique down? :bigthink

    tips? :cheer:

:jj: Well I played bass, occasionally I'd use a pick Jason Newstead style.

I'm not that good, just been playing a few years. I started out using a pick, but then I learned how to fingerpick and just play with my fingers, and I liked how it sounded better. I guess it's cause I like a lot of the "jazz sound". Sounds more natural to me. It's just more "my sound". I haven't played with a pick in years. I don't have solid body though. Just have an acoustic, and a hollowbody jazz style (Epiphone Joe Pass).

    :freebird:

Almost every bass player i've meet that uses a pick always bring Jason's name up. He has a big following that he probably doesn't even realise :artiejj:

For those interested in guitar technique this is interesting. I recently discovered their music and have been fascinated by the ability to play rhythm and "lead" at the same time. Wilko Johnson of Dr. Feelgood played solos strumming, with the left hand doing a lot of the work. I think he picked up the idea for the style from some old blues players.

    This video shows how

And one of the songs live from the band showing the style in action on a few songs. Dude is playing solos w/o picking.

Very nice dude, finger picking does get the ladies wet with the right tone! :c
Upload some pics when you can, would love to see that Joe Pass :thumbup2:

I used to get callus on my fingers from finger picking when i started years ago, horrible time learning the technique, when your used to it you don't feel anything.
I've had a big lump on my left inside thumb for many years from sliding up and down the neck, got delicate hands :c

You rarely see players that use the thumb that overlaps the neck and holds down notes, his correct how it makes a great stab sound!
Never heard of him, seems like his on drugs or something :artiejj:

i still can't find one that feels comfortable. i usually try to go with closed hand, but loosen some fingers a little. really, though, i just suck. i practice and actually get worse. i'm sure it doesn't help that i never took lessons, but still. i can barely play through a full song of all barre chords without cramping. i'm just naturally bad.

It's a standard Epi Joe Pass, mine has Kent Armstrong humbuckers (don't know much about those but the guy that sold it to me said they're supposed to be good). Got it used for $370. Pretty nice guitar for the money. Sounds nice through my 70s Twin. Good for jazz, classic rock, country, pop (just nothing with too much distortion cause of feedback)(unless I use a Pod or amp sim with headphones). This isn't mine but it looks like this (I took the pickguard and the cheesy "Joe Pass" signature off of mine):

Callouses on your picking fingers ? Weird, I don't get those at all. Maybe because my technique is so simple. I do get huge callouses on my fretting fingers though. I file them to smooth them out every week or so.

They turn out light pink when i pick with them for a while, they were red when i first learned the style, now my fingers are immune to it, also have very sensitive skin dude :(

Love big guitars, for that price you can't go wrong, i like the bridges on those, you can adjust them by the 2 flat screws that raises and lowers the strings.....have that on my Z Power acoustic....f holes make the sound more vibrant.

I tried my hand at acoustic guitar when I was a teenager, but haven't tried it since.

Three of my absolute favorite guitarists here, from a long list, have somewhat different styles:

Billy Zoom for "X" always cracks me up with his playing, he makes such a huge sound with virtually no effort or even breaking a sweat:
