Whats your limit on vet bills before you just decide to euthanize & buy a new animal?

A broad I work with just dumped $2200 into her 7 year old dog... I cant, for the life of me, see the logic in this....Especially when the normal life expectancy is 11 to 13 years... Euthanizing costs about $200 (which is what her vet quoted her), and then buying a brand new dog would run about $600...That's a considerable savings, AND you'd have a new, much younger animal (with more energy) ....I simply don't understand this mentality... How much is sentiment really worth to you?? ... Why wouldn't you put the damaged dog down & buy a new, healthy, dog?

How much would you spend on your child's hospital bills before you decide to pull the plug?

it's my money; if i can afford to spend it on someone or something i consider worthy (and there are far less humans i consider that worthy) why do you feel the need to voice an opinion on my choice?

lets go a little bit further: i'm willing to bet that my animals eat better than most people on this board, because it makes me happy that they do.

    A) Animals are closer to being commodities than they are humans, therefore the two are not a fair comparison..
    B) Human life expectancy is considerably longer than animals, therefore likelier to be worth the investment
    C) If a grandparent or other loved one was 80 years old & needed a $40,000 medical procedure, its likely that I would support euthanasia in that instance

i spent somewhat more that the amount in OP's post 20 years ago so one of my dogs could have chemo for a really stupid cancerous tumor on her urethra. There just seemed no reason to kill something just because it could not piss due to a tumor the size of a green pea. She had three treatments before i decided to euthanize her because the chemo was hurting her more than was her not being able to piss.

Agreed. But I would think you'd go the extra mile if it was your kid deathly ill, rather than a dog.

Maybe it's just me, but when I see somebody lose a human being close to them it affects them more than losing a pet.

I'd rather spend the money on an animal. Fuck kids. If you can't afford to properly care for one, don't get one.
