In the 40's and 50's we had Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne. Then Brando was great in the 50's with Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront. Jack Nicholson with Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, the Last Detail, & Cuckoo's Nest. DeNiro made Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, the Deer Hunter, King of Comedy, GoodFellas, and Casino. Gene Hackman in Bonnie & Clyde, French Connection, and Unforgiven. Even Pacino before he became a caricature (like Nicholson) was great in the Godfather 1 & 2 and Serpico.

Are present day movie stars just too faggy and mannered? Not one of them stick out in my mind as anything special except for some good comedy roles by Steve Carrell. Maybe I'm just getting old, not sure.

Dicaprio, Tom Hardy, Micheal Fassbender, Vincent Cassel, Daniel Day-Lewis, Matt Damon, Cillian Murphy, I would say Ryan Gossling but sometimes he can be fantastic and other times plain shit. There are others just can't think.

Edward Norton almost always delivers a solid performance. Along with Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman.

John Wayne was NEVER a great actor. Maybe a FAMOUS actor...
Actors of great caliber have always been rare. The rest were faggy and mannered since the silent era. Are you talking of a certain age? There are actors that are good and have been around a while. DiCaprio, Bale, Depp, Hanks, DD Lewis, Brian Cox, Ed Norton,Toby Jones,Ed Harris, Sam Shepard,Viggo Mortensen,RDJ, and more. Maybe not all blockbuster names, but incredible acting.

I am definitely getting old because I don't know who Tom Hardy, Vincent Cassel, and Cillian Murphy are. But, you're right about Day-Lewis. Forgot about him. Matt Damon is also solid. Was Fassbender the guy who played the British officer who spoke German in Inglorious Basterds? I liked Gossling in that movie where Steve Carrell is cuckolded by Julianna Moore and Kevin Bacon.

John Wayne is like Jack Nicholson. Very good at playing themselves, more or less.

Norton is really good. I read he is a major pain in the ass, which keeps him out of many movies (anyone dumb enough to get involved with Courtney Love must have a screw loose).

Ed Harris is always good. I think Dicaprio is okay but a pretty big step down as Scorcese's "go to guy" after DeNiro got too old. Compare DiCaprio in the Departed to DeNiro in Mean Streets, there is no comparison.

I don't get the Gosling thing. MOSTLY that chicks think he's hot. The second is that there's always this underlying (and sometimes blatant) morose quality to his portrayals. I'm not a fan, so maybe I missed some roles where he had a personality.
