There is almost no way a guy who just killed another human can all the sudden turn off the hate. So, we wind up with Marines pissing on their dead enemies. It's not nice, but that's war.

But Americans want "nice" wars. There is no such thing. Or at least, there are no "nice" wars that can be won.

You win wars by being brutal. We didn't lose the Civil War in the South until Sherman started kicking the shit out of us and burning Georgia from Atlanta to Savannah. It wasn't very nice. He killed livestock his troops could not eat, burned fields, destroyed railroad networks, and looted. Yeah, it wasn't nice, but the war did end. Unreal, a war where the troops rarely fought in the winter months and transport of troops was a major hassle, to think that war lasted less than 5 years. How long has Afghanistan gone on?

WWII. Burning of Dresden, nuking 2 cities in Japan, civilian deaths out the ass. Brutal? Yes. But that war, for the US anyways, lasted from late '41 (for the Pacific) and '42 (in Europe and Africa) to mid-1945.

You don't win wars by killing them kindly. You win wars by killing them brutally and without regard to "respect" to the enemy or "compassion" for the civilians.

This lil tiff about some urine splashed on enemy dead is indicative of a war-effort that does not see victory, but rather, conditional peace. Not even surrender! But a conditional peace. Hello Vietnam. We didn't learn shit from the perils of entering Vietnam (we shouldn't have been there in the first place) to winning the war (hearts and minds is laughable; terrorizing the civilians works. Ask the Germans and Japanese and Southerners).

All this goes to the notion that perhaps war isn't the answer at all. That war is a joke. That concepts of "war crimes" is a farce because war IS a crime in and of itself. Harken back to the voice over in Apocalypse now. "An illegal killing? Here? That's like writing speeding tickets at the Indy 500."

Soldiers and Marines desecrating the enemy dead IS war. The fact that we aren't questioning the war itself, and the policy-makers in charge and the profiteers, but rather questioning the men fighting the war indicates a nation that's lost its moral compass.

All imperialist powers think they're the good guys and not the enemy. History repeats the old conceits..

This. He's too much of a sellout these days to rant about anybody in this Hemisphere because everybody he could target is someone Beth might meet at some bullshit or someone who is too few degrees of separation from that ridiculous new gig. He's relegated to reviving decade-old rants about the Taliban.
