HELSINKI – Five British men, reportedly including members of British indie band Viola Beach, were killed when their car drove through a barrier and plunged into a canal near Stockholm.

Stockholm Police spokesman Martin Bergholm said that the accident on Saturday afternoon occurred when the men's hire car crashed through a barrier that was closed to stop vehicles as a drawbridge was opening up ahead. The victims were British and aged between 20 and 35, he said.

He did not further identify them or give other details of the men, saying it was not a police matter.

British media reported that they were members of the indie band Viola Beach, based in Warrington in northwestern England.

The band had played at a Swedish music festival on Friday and was scheduled to open for headline artists Blossoms at a concert in the British city of Guilford on Saturday, but the music venue said in a statement that Blossoms decided to cancel the gig after learning that Viola Beach had been involved in an accident.

"We are saddened and devastated as details have come to light of this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with family and friends," the venue Boileroom said in a statement to the AP.

Police did not know the reason for the accident and were still investigating, Bergholm said, adding that it was getting dark and the road was slippery.

"There were no brake marks on the road and it's very difficult to say how fast the car was going at the time," Bergholm said, adding that an eye witness -- a truck driver who had stopped at the barrier -- estimated the speed at between 43 and 50 mph.

The accident occurred on the E4 highway in Stockholm's Sodertalje district.

They seemed to be getting some buzz going-

    Edit
Viola Beach formed in Warrington in mid-2013, the original members being the late Kris Leonard (guitar and vocals), Frankie Coulson (guitar), Jonny Gibson (bass) and Jack Dakin (drums).[6] The band's last lineup was formed in May 2015 with original members Leonard and Dakin joined by River Reeves (guitar) and Tomas Lowe (bass).[7][8] They made their debut at The Cavern Club in Liverpool.[9] Their first single "Swings and Waterslides" was added to the BBC Radio 1 playlist in September 2015.[10] The band was promoted by BBC Introducing, which described their songs as "infectious anthems" with "hints of slacker pop".[10] They performed at the BBC Introducing Stage of the 2015 Reading and Leeds Festivals.[7][11] In November 2015, the band recorded a live session for BBC Radio 1.[12] The band released their second single, "Boys That Sing" / "Like a Fool", on the Communion Records label on 22 January 2016.[13] Following news of the band members' deaths, it was announced that all proceeds from the single would be donated to the families of the band members and of their manager.[13]

    InfluencesEdit

When asked about his musical influences, singer-guitarist Kris Leonard said, "I'm definitely not consciously influenced by anyone",[7] but mentioned The Coral, The Zutons, The Beatlesand Hooton Tennis Club as being among his favourite Liverpool bands.[7][5] He also said the Kooks's debut studio album Inside In/Inside Out played a big part in him becoming a musician.[14] BBC Introducing recommended the band to fans of Coasts and the Kooks.[10]

The bridges of the Södertälje Channel. The accident took place in the E4 highway bridge (middle).
On 13 February 2016, the four band members and their manager, Craig Tarry, were killed in an accident at the E4motorway bridge at Södertälje, southwest of Stockholm.[2][3][4] Witnesses saw the car fall through a gap in the bridge, which was open to let a boat pass.[15] The band was in Sweden, having played at the Where's the Music? festival in Norrköping the previous day.[1] They were scheduled to play at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, in March 2016.[16][17]

As of 14 February 2016, the officially recognised cause or reasons for the road traffic incident has not been formally confirmed by the Swedish authorities.[15]

Am I reading this correctly, they drove over a drawbridge doing 50mph? Sounds like something that usually happens in Florida.
