Howard related because they've been discussing Jim Bakker's re-emergence as a "survivalist".

We have a ton of this shit in our house (not Jim Bakker's brand, but it's the same kind of stuff). My husband has this idea that something is going to happen and we need the stuff...which kind of scares me. He's former Air Force, high level security clearance, so I wonder what he knows that the rest of us don't know that has him adamant about prepping. We have all the food and supplies to make the food, a meeting place if we get separated, emergency kits in our cars, camping equipment for the event that there are no cars. It all takes up a lot of space. The food looks gross too. I will need to be super desperate to eat that crap.

I'm an AF guy too, but if the world is coming to an end, I want to end, not fight for food with a bunch of zombies.

Omega man scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.

    I wouldn't say I'm a prepper ...
My house is odd- I have a huge pretty plush bomb shelter attached to the back of my basement. My house was built in '63, so it's understandable why it was built. It has a 6" concrete slab over it and two industrial steel doors. It just happens to be where I keep stuff.
In it I have many cases of bottled water, paper goods, all of my firearms and 1000's of rounds of ammo, the majority being 7.62x39 = AK 47 rounds.

Society is constantly breaking down, but we have millions of fail-safes. The thing that will kill us will be fast and unavoidable.

Your husband seems to have a mental illness. Sure the world is goin to hell, but some tents and food isn't going to do shit except extend your existence for a few more hours. Best to just ride this out and live each day like it may be your last. Oh, I have boxes of granola bars so I guess that's my extent of hoarding food

I'm not a prepper, but I sometimes wish I had more prepper stuff. I don't think society as we know it will end in my lifetime. I do certainly believe that in Southern California, when the next big earthquake hits, a shitload of people will be VERY vulnerable for 24-72 hours. There may be no police response for things like, "someone is trying to break into my house." So I firmly believe in having materials for about a week's worth of enclosed survival. After that, I recognize if things aren't going back to normal it's time to join or form a gang and protect my family.

He doesn't show signs of any mental illness.

I think our biggest threat being in Columbus OH is having Wright Patt AFB an hour from us. If any place in Ohio will become a target, it's Wright Patt AFB (in my opinion).

I live in the country. Some roads I ride on don't have many cars on them. I keep a bag in my car that has water, some food, a wool blanket, a tube tent and cord, strike all matches, a knife, fire starter and kindling, some extra cloths, a flashlight, a first aid kit and stuff like that.
If I drive off the road and get trapped in my car I want to have enough stuff to survive until they find me.

I am the opposite of a doomsday prepper - I am so reliant on civilization that if the power goes off for about 30 minutes I'll probably have hung myself.

I have some cash and a clean credit card.

I look at 9/11 and Katrina as the two most catastrophic events of my lifetime......

9/11: Not to be disrespectful to those who suffered a loss, but on 9/11 you either died in the towers or, waaaaaa, had to walk home across the Brooklyn Bridge. Whadda ya gonna do? All the MRE in the world ain't going to change that scenario.

Katrina: Really simple - if you had money and a car, you drove to Houston or Dallas and checked into a nice hotel. You probably had homeowners insurance for everything else.

I don't understand the morbid fascination with seeing some type of mass invasion or end of days and trying to fight it out. It's not going to happen.
