And how has the experience been for you so far?

I'm currently renting cheap and living with a bunch of roommates, but owning a nice place would be cool. Sometimes I fantasize about living in a kick-ass apartment in the city somewhere, and making it my own.

    Future stuff, though.

It's been nice but I live in the country with a nice view. Never run out of things to fix. Would rather live somewhere else every other day.

    Fuck it.

I'm glad I did it but it come with a price.

If you can buy new with a warranty do it that way, if you can't; get a motherfucker of a home inspector who has experience to see what is wrong now and what might be a problem in the future.

The one I hired "overlooked" the windows, and the roof.

So I've spent over 3k on replacement windows with 2 sliding glass doors to be replaced this spring for another 3k. And had my entire roof down to the studs replaced for about 9k.

But in the meantime I've got over 100k in equity in the house because of paying additional principle on the mortgage every month since Iv'e owned it. At one point it was worth 380k, but since the rescission it's worth about 305k.

Owning is nice, but make DAMN sure you can afford it easily before you commit.

I am currently living in the 4th house ive either purchased with someone or on my own. The mortgage is over halfway done, so i cant take the interest deduction anymore. At approximately 85 years old, its the newest house ive ever owned. I sort of like having a house; i love to have a dog so you sort of need at least a small yard. I like to think i know about working on houses but you never have enough time to do everything you want to do it seems.

I've lived in this house for 16 years and have become pretty friendly with the neighbors. Everywhere I look there's something I've done to improve the house or the property and it binds me to the place.

I've been here 20 years and raised my kids here but now I'm thinking of either downsizing or renting it out and living somewhere else. Too much house and too far away. I hate that I'm tied to it. I could sell it but that's a giant pain in the ass. I'm fucking lazy so I'll probably just play out the string here.

I would never build shit like this at a rental.

Owning a house isn't for everyone though. You need to be a little bit handy IMO or you're gonna be hiring a lot of expensive professionals to do stuff around the house. I've worked for people that won't even go into their basements. [IMG]

My gf never saw or went into an unfinished basement until she met me! They still creep her out.

I rent but I want to buy something in a few years hopefully.

Even paying $750 a month rent you are paying $9lk a year which is $90K in 10 years, and you can buy a cheap condo for that.

You can buy warranties for any age home purchase. They start at about $500. The seller will usually buy it unless you are in a really competitive market.

$750 a month might get you a bedroom and kitchenette in a really bad part of town around here.

We have lived here about 25 years, property tax has tripled, the house was built in 1937, completely remodeled it in the first few years, now things need re-doing
Plus, we have 30 acres and usually have 5-7 cows. The epa has demanded we fence the cows out of the creek and water them by hand. We havent had cows for a year or so and have to mow/bush hog the pasture.

I heard that one head of cattle shits 40-50 lbs a fucking day. :shakey: I'm glad they are keeping them from the creek. Thanks Obama. Can't you let some geyser bail the hay from the property in exchange for cutting it? If you have been there 25 years and property taxes have tripled, it sounds like the property value probably increased a lot and you should be close to paying the place off. good for you. :lo5:

    Where do you live generally?
