I broke down and listened to a repeat of the WUS yesterday evening. The staff kicked around who they thought was the best visiting comic to sit in on Robin's news. For my marbles, it's Gilbert. In a cakewalk. One of them (maybe J.D.) did suggest that Wiggy don't like his temple-mate anymore. It might explain why he hasn't been on the show in months.
Back when Wiggy was still on free radio, Gilbert did a riff on the news when Robin did a story about a N.J. elementary school teacher who was fired after she asked a black girl in her class if the gorilla on her book binder was a relative of hers. I'm not kidding when say that I had to pull my car over to the side of he road. "Don't tell anyone about this comment Sweetie and I'll give you a banana." "It's alright Honey, you can play on the tire swing at recess."
Is anyone better than Gilbert? As Patrick Swayze said in Road House "Opinions vary". Who's the best? [IMG]

    Gilbert #1

Sam Kinison was fantastic also but it wasn't until after his death in 92 that I started listening to Stern so I've only heard him on the replays.

Back in the 90s it seemed like every week there was at least 1 comedian sitting in for the news

Gilbert was great as he used to get Robin crazy during the news. Another good guest was Daniel Carver - another one who will not be back on. At least he did not spit in the cupcakes.

Oh, yeah - Kinison. Best ever. Hard to believe it has been so long.

Gilbert is great, but Billy's Marge Schott is right up there. To think, we've gone from guys like this to "Bigfoot Jr." and "Wanda Sykes Jr."

Ah yes, the time when Robin's News was fun and funny and not all about: "Anything else, Robin?"

Gilbert was great. For me, the HSS was over when Stern got upset with Gilbert and Artie for having too much fun with the news. Something about "A group of lovely people..."

You didn't hear? There's one in the White House. Howard got REALLY uncomfortable when Gilbert said that.

His picture should be in the dictionary beside the word "unfunny". He is beyond bad.

I was a sporadic listener since Private Parts (the book) but to my ears, Gilbert was the best overall. Him and Artie together on the news was always a treat.

Nobody is better than Artie, but that was then, this is now, and we no longer have ANY comedy/comedians on THSS....

no one even comes close to gilbert, his "news" appearances are some of the most memorable parts of the classic stern era. Once artie got in the mix gilbert's appearances would get that much funnier with the two egging eachother on until robin almost lost her fucking mind. you could actually hear robin becoming unglued on the air.... miss those days. best radio anywhere ever.

Toss up between Gilbert and Artie... but Schuli... His recording Lisa G in the newsroom bit was the only funny thing he has done all year.. I do like him on Dr. Fisch's show and he's a good counterpart for Jay Thomas..
