Bruce or Max Martin
Martin has made millions for writing tunes (many of them suck) for numerous groups and bands. He's a money making machine.
A case could be made for McCartney or any of those people who came out of the Brill Building..
His three rock operas are some of the greatest music performances and rock albums ever made. Tommy, Quadrophenia, and the unfinished Lifehouse (released as Who's Next)
if we are limiting ourselves to pop music then the top 5 list would include Bowie, Neil Young, Springsteen, Paul Simon and Dylan
Gershwins, Berlin, Davis, Coletrain, Zappa, Lennon, Joel, etc.
I forgot Leonard Bernstein
I reckon she writes better words than anyone who writes better music, and better music than anyone who writes better words.
Lennon/McCartney, Dylan, Carole King and Townsend
Music? Lyrics? Best combination of the twor?
When will Stern address this?
Paul Simon and / or Glenn Danzig
Hey don't forget Brian, musically one of the best. Usually had help with the lyrics though.
It's a team, The Glimmer Twins.
Dylan, hands down.
Howard A. Stern
"Silver nickels and golden dimes" was his "stairway". Or should I say led zepplins "stairway to heaven" was their "Silver nickels"
Stern stopped there because the art of the written song could never be topped with that masterpiece
Johnny Cash comes to mind...
