why is gold a commodity? cheaper metals do better jobs than gold. It holds no real function.
Diamonds are great at being hard, but why wear one on your finger? surely this drives the price up
and don't get me started on silver

Gold doesn't tarnish or rust. And it looks pretty.

Silver and Gold can't be lab-created, hence their value. Diamonds are valuable because of the stranglehold DeBeers and the like have on the market. In some places in Africa, you can mine for diamonds using your shoe.

Gold was considered a rare commodity, because of the work involved in finding it. Also the beauty of it. Since most countries had gold already, it was an easy standard for anyone to jump into the ship on.

Only problem is throughout history, normally the one with the most gold wins. Right now that's China.

Diamonds are a result of the greatest marketing hoax on history diamonds = love

gold has several industrial uses, is limited, can't be man made. It has always been a universally agreed upon currency ...Nixon taking the dollar of the gold standard is a temp blip in historical record. It will be reversed

It's all based on history, gold is one of the few metals that has natural luster without modern manufacturing techniques. If you lived in ancient Rome or Greece, gold was the ultimate status symbol due to its rarity and appearance, and because it could be melted down and re-smelted, it was the perfect currency.

That's precisely why I buy shoes. I never know when I'll find my way to Africa.
