There are like 6 of them in the Northeast. They are not connected and they are not interstate but they are all Interstate 495. Couldn't they come up with more numbers? :dontknow:

Aren't they local (beltways) offshoots of I-95?

Yes and yes. But they should have different names. One may be lead to believe that an interstate highway would be a highway that went through multiple states.

Because it's part of the interstate system maintained by the US military. It was implemented to act as defense route for military vehicles. It started from the initiation of the Federal Aid Road Act of 1916.

Still shouldn't be called an interstate.

Same with one in Alaska unless it goes all the way to the regular US as the same road. keeping the same number through Canadialand.

That joke is also part of the Federal Aid Road Act of 1916.

It's better to make a thread about it.

Interstates are even-numbered from west to east, odd from south to north. The old US Highway System are odd and even in the same orientation, but run high to low from east to west and north to south. All interstates have 2 digits. Three digit numbers are reserved for loop and spur roads. Loops start with even numbers, spurs with odd.

There's plenty of other numbers that fit the criteria. Lazy unoriginal highway naming cocksuckers.
