Why did Spaniards feel the need to put an inverted question-mark to start a question?

Why isn't the question-mark at the end if the sentence suffiecnt enough to indicate that a question has been posed?

    this seems unnecessary, and wasteful.

They wanted you to know that it is a serious question.

I don't know, but in Armenian you put the the question mark (which is like a circle) over the word that is asking the question. I think every language just made up the rules as they went.

Although Spanish originated on the Iberian Peninsula as a descendant of Latin, today it is has far more speakers in Latin America, having been brought to the New World by Spanish colonialization. Although there are minor differences in vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation between the Spanish of Spain and the Spanish of Latin America, the differences are not so great as to prevent easy communication

I like that little innovation in Spanish. In English, it's not obvious at the beginning of every sentence that a question is coming so a preceding character like that prepares the reader. Nice touch, Spaniards.

and then to show people they're macho, they like to dress in gay-clothing and wave blankets in front of a 2000 pound animal...like there's any sophistication to that at all.
