I was in New York on Friday and was walking by NBC Studios at Rockefeller Center. It was around 3 in the afternoon. There are tents and sleeping bags in the sidewalk and people look like they have been there for a while. I asked them what they were waiting for and they said SNL. I know SNL is sold out so I imagine this was a stand-by line. I thought they must have big name guest host and a top music act tonight. No, it Fred Armisen and Courtney Barnett. Why would anyone want to sleep on the sidewalk overnight for this. It wasn't a few people, either. There must have 30-40 people in line. I toured NBC Studios several years ago and they take you into Studio 8-H. If you are in the audience in SNL it's not like going to a sitcom taping. Many of the sets are built with the wall in front of the audience. The only way you can see the skit is on the monitor.
The monologue and musical act are the only thing you are guaranteed to be performed in front of you. What a waste of time!

I saw Jimmy Kimmel live like 10 years ago and it was free, not sure if SNL costs anything, but if it is free, I kinda get it. I wouldn't do it though.

I went in the 90's! Fred Savage was the host, and the musical guest was that group that played that shitty Pump up the Jam song. Over all I had fun, but you really only see a tiny part of the show.

Camping out in front of 30 Rock (or wherever) for a night might be fun to say you did one time in your life - assuming you were properly provisioned. ;)

Certainly not for the quality of the show, which has been shit for at least a decade, but just from a pop culture prospective.

I totally get it & would do it myself. Saying you were in the audience for an episode of SNL is kinda a big thing & historic to an extent. There is nothing like SNL & is easily the coolest show you can be in the audience for.

Let me be the first person to say this before anyone else says this. "Who watches that anymore'? "That show was never funny". "I miss the old days of the show".
Please don't litter this post with those phrases like every time an SNL post is made on here. We get it. If you aren't a fan of the show or quit watching we already know by now. Please add something new to the conversation.

I went to see SNL back around 1990 and it was a pretty cool experience. As I remember it wasn't that difficult to get tickets, just had to request them way in advance.

The host was Justine Bateman who was on Family Ties with Michael J Fox. The cast at the time had the great Phil Hartman and Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon. Maybe the last good cast come to think of it.

I think these people are paid by NBC to sleep in this line, to show passers-by there is still some kind of "buzz" for the show.

Maybe because of Howards riveting interviews where he sucks the ass of Loren and the cast.

I worked on a show last year about the standby line so, here's the deal...

There's 3 ways to see SNL in person.

    1) You either get a ticket given to you by a cast member, writer, or producer.

    2) You send in a post card to win a lottery held in the Summer.

    3) You wait in line out on the sidewalk. Tickets are handed out to only so many people early Saturday morning and, depending on the Host or musical performer that week, you run the risk of getting "big timed" by one of Lorne's VIP's even after waiting several nights outside in the cold.

There's also no scalping or money exchanges, they are very strict about making sure that the person that was issued the ticket early Saturday morning is the same person who enters the studio Saturday night.

They give tickets out for the Live Show and the Dress Rehearsal, so two different audiences get to see the show. If you ever wait in line outside and you see more than 20 people and it's NOT really late Friday night or really early Saturday AM, just leave, you probably won't be getting in and you're just wasting your time.

They don't let them camp out in front of 30 Rock anymore They make them wait out in front of the Nintendo Store on 49th st. between 5th and 6th Ave.

There are lots of people with nothing going on.

How about all those idiots waiving outside the window of the morning shows?

I would have done it back in high school to see when Nirvana , Pearl Jam or Hole performed. I used to stay up late for that shit most Saturdays when music was good. Now the cast sucks, the hosts all suck and the music sucks.
