I was in New York on Friday and was walking by NBC Studios at Rockefeller Center. It was around 3 in the afternoon. There are tents and sleeping bags in the sidewalk and people look like they have been there for a while. I asked them what they were waiting for and they said SNL. I know SNL is sold out so I imagine this was a stand-by line. I thought they must have big name guest host and a top music act tonight. No, it Fred Armisen and Courtney Barnett. Why would anyone want to sleep on the sidewalk overnight for this. It wasn't a few people, either. There must have 30-40 people in line. I toured NBC Studios several years ago and they take you into Studio 8-H. If you are in the audience in SNL it's not like going to a sitcom taping. Many of the sets are built with the wall in front of the audience. The only way you can see the skit is on the monitor. The monologue and musical act are the only thing you are guaranteed to be performed in front of you. What a waste of time!
