Was it because of the scarf?
some of the best shows were during his run.
Longest tenure , and through showings on PBS in America , he was many in this country's first exposure to the character.
the scarf was originally supposed to be regular length, but the wardrobe lady that knitted it misunderstood and used all the yarn they gave her.
Uh because he just was? didn't need no time-wimey special catchphrases.
in many ways the character of the doctor since the mid 1970s was basically written using Tom's personality as the basis. Tom was extroverted and bigger than life on screen (he still is); one of the reasons they don't have him on screen with the others now is because he naturally overshadows their performances.
also one of the principle script writers and script editor for season 17 during Tom Baker's era was Douglas Adams (Monty Python, Hitchhiker's Guide, etc.). Douglas Adams sense of humor is rampant in the Baker era scripts. The same writing that made Monty Python and Hitchhiker's Guide special, popular and still spawning new performances after 40 years is in all the Baker era scripts. None of the earlier or later script writers come up to Adam's level of genius (although Moffit and Gattiss are in the top three or four).
he was the first doctor aired in the US: i saw some of his aired on WOR-NY and WNET between 1973 and 1976 (because i dont recall exactly when) and i was hooked. I arranged for friends to audio record the shows and post them to brooklyn on reel-to-reel tape (because video tape was > 1.5" thick then)
I read that Tom Baker was a major alcoholic and a prick on the set.
find a supremely talented star who isn't a diva. peter davidson was the justin beiber of his day, jumping between starlette mariages.
I've tried to like Mr. Who but its just too British for me.
What does that mean?
it means he never watched.
He's the audience BBCA orginally targeted a few years ago when they ran English subtitles on Dr Who and advertised "English Spoken Here"
if they do an episode titled "Dr Who Saves Wall Street Investors" then he will watch.
Apparently my cheeky irony has gone unappreciated in this thread
Its low budget and poorly done.
