How do you determine if a work friend is your real friend outside of work? This might seem like a no brainer but curious how you guys determine the difference.

If your work friend will follow you to drop your car off to be repaired and takes you to his house for dinner. He might be a real friend. If a work friend needs help moving his daughter 200 miles away and you help, you might be a real friend.

if you're 16 you can probably make real friends at work
when you're 43 they're just people you work with--tread lightly

if you are willing to hang out with them beyond work hours, I would consider them to be real friends.
For most coworkers, I am not willing. hehe

I would usually subscribe to this, and often said, "if I want another friend I'll buy a puppy."

But at the last place I worked (10 years of tenure) I met two really good guys, that I would now consider friends.

Yeah, I'm starting to realize this now. I guess I was a liitle nieve. Once HS is over its hard to make friends in adult life. If you tread lightly at work though, you may misd an opportunity to miss a potential true friend though, no?

A lot of it has to do with what kind of work you do. If you have a job where your lives depend on each other doing the right thing, it can make you close enough to be friends.

Work friends can never be real friends. Period.

I don't agree with this. I have friends that I met at work. Long time friends.

I don't think you have any real friends or you never had a real job.

    Friends come in all sizes.....
You have your daily friends, usually the work ones, that you chat with about what you did last night, or what you had for dinner...etc....
You have your weekly friends, usually the ones you go out for a drink with after work, and tell about all the shit stuff going on, because they listen, and know you
You have your monthly friends usually the ones who get the "big picture" chats, ie I bought a new car, so and so left her husband etc.
Then your yearly friends, usually the ones that moved away, or have lives that don't mesh with yours, beasties from childhood etc, that you can chat with for like three hours, and never run out of shit to say, then you promise "we should do this more often" and never do.....

Or you can avoid the headache of having someone take advantage of your 'friendship'.
"Hey man, I need to cut out early, can you cover for me." "I don't have time to get all this done, can you take care of some of it?" "Shit, I have a urinalysis, can I borrow some of your piss?"

That is correct. Stuck in the same car for 8 hrs and occasionally thrown into life threatening situations will also have that effect.

In the past, I thought I was good friends with work people, until they left the company I was at and never heard from them again.
But I've done that too. Once you don't see them every day it's over. For me anyway.

friends are people who are there when things in your life are going to shit, to do whatever you need, without being asked, it doesn't matter where you meet them or spend time with them

Some of my closest friends (all guys) I met while working at a grocery store in HS. Friends are not people you hang out with for drinks, or grab a bite. Many of my closest friends and I see each other rarely, but if I needed them to drive to Florida because I told them I needed them, they would drop everything and do it, and I would do the same.

Here's my advice, (not that you asked) stop trying to make friends. Do things you like to do, and strike up conversations with people who share your interests, be social and enjoy life. You will meet someone (s) over time that you'll start to have real conversations with, who you will start to connect with and trust.

If you have 3-4 true friends in your lifetime, you are a lucky person
