My friend likes his job but was approached about a job that has NOT be offered yet; but the salary and package is at least 50k more than he is making. Travel about the same; can live in a very nice part of the new city. Would run 4 locations for this company as Director of Sales to be promoted to VP of Sales. Supervise about 8 people.

Would you consider it-would have to move or at least get a small place in the new city and commute back and forth while family stays in current location.

Depends on the cost of living difference between where he lives and where he's moving to. That wouldn't be much of a raise if I moved from Dallas to Washington DC or Los Angeles. Huge cost of living differences. Does he currently pay state income tax and does the new place have it? That's another huge cost.

If he gets a place in the new city and leaves his family at home, a good chunk of the 50K will be eaten up. I worked in Austin and left my family in DFW because I didn't want to uproot the family. It worked out for me but that was a long 18 months.

I guess it also matters how much he is making now. If he makes 40K, a 50K raise would be huge. If he's making 200K, 50K is a smaller impact.

Would the new job throw in a free apartment? If not, he isn't getting a 50k increase. You gotta figure 25k upkeep on a 2nd residence, even if it's only a rental.

After you deduct that and the taxes from the extra 50k, he'll be lucky to be taking home an extra 10-15k a year.

No state income tax in this state he is moving too. The city isn't as good as where he lives now but he would live in a very nice suburban city and not really deal with the city per se.

Schools don't matter as they are close to being empty nesters anyway. He would keep his current house and probably buy a modest house there as a 2nd residence.
