Would you take a filter off your cable if it meant getting faster free internet?

Cable tech came over to my house today to fix some noise in the cable line that was causing me to get lower speeds..

Well he comes out changes all the connectors which fixes the problem.. took about 20 mins

before he leaves we do a speed test... I am paying for 100 mbps.. the test kept showing speeds of over 120 mbps...

He tells me .. wow your lines are working too good , they want me to put a filter on your line to slow it down..

He unscrews the coax cable to the back of my modem and screws in a metal filter ... after which my speeds were showing

up as 80-90 mbps... so guess what I did after he drove off?

As a guy who used to climb the telephone pole and unscrew the filters to get HBO and Showtime the answer is YES. Still got some in the drawer someplace.

Sorry, but there is no filter that decreases your speed as a rule. Cable internet speeds are determined by the boot file loaded on the modem by the ISP.

Same thing but they used to put them on the pole between the service cable and the line running into the house. Parked the picked next to the pole at night so I could reach the first set of spikes and in a few minutes free premium channels. Made lots of friends and family happy back then. Only problem was when you had trouble with service and the tech came to the house. I just played dumb [which wasn't hard at all]

And ... the tech you had is an asshat if he is lying to you and telling you "they" want him to install something to temper your speed.

I honestly don't know why he would say that. I've worked for the largest cable company in the land for 11 years now and haven't once been told I need to do anything to lower someone's speed ... it's all controlled by boot file.

As far as why your speed would decrease, the only thing that I can think of is that the "filter" might be dropping your signal levels enough to start causing a little packet loss. It would help if I saw the filter or at least knew what was printed on or pressed into it.

Upload and download speeds are both controlled. With Comcast, if you have the 100 Mbps service, your upload speed should be 10 Mbps or higher on average.

he looked at it and said .. oh this is looking too good... they want me to put a filter on this to make it fall into this range

Good thing you got rid of it, those filters make you go all Helter Skelter, it's like Videodrome.

Saw it on an X-Files episode.

What he was likely looking at is what my company calls the Home Health Check. It lists the signal levels and things of that nature which the modem is reporting. He may have needed to pad the signal down to get it within spec, but that SHOULD not affect your speed. I'm guessing you have pretty hot levels coming in.
