Lucca becomes the 30th dog in 73 years to receive the Dickin Award after losing a leg while searching for improvised explosives.

Lucca lost one of her front legs during a search for improvised explosive devices in 2012.

The 12-year-old German Shepherd completed more than 400 missions with the US Marine Corps in Iraq and Afghanistan - helping protect thousands of troops.

Now retired, she has been flown from California to be presented with the Dickin Medal at Wellington Barracks in London.

Lucca's handler, Gunnery Sergeant Christopher Willingham told Sky News is was an "incredible honour" to receive the award.

"It is very humbling to be part of this entire process. I think more importantly is that Lucca's accomplishments are going to help bring awareness and recognition too all our military working dogs and their handlers.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for the dog handlers who have served before me and allowed me to do my job today.

"I have had the privilege of serving with some of the finest, both in Iraq and Afghanistan."

The award was founded in 1943 and is bestowed by the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA).

Jan McLoughlin, from the charity, said: "Lucca's conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty makes her a hugely deserving recipient of the PDSA Dickin Medal.

"Her ability and determination to seek out arms and explosives preserved human life amid some of the world's fiercest military conflicts."

The award has previously been given to 29 dogs, 32 World War Two messenger pigeons, three horses and one cat.

It's very hard for a dog to lose a front leg. I had a dog who lost a back leg. He got around and made it to the ripe old age of 16.

my run in with a military dog story -

the gf and i are going on to base in thailand to watch a movie. the gate had extra security and a air force cop with a pot sniffing dog. when i got to the gate, the fucking dog (a shaggy, wild looking german shepherd) shoved its nose under my balls and lifted. :nooo:

like any normal human i wacked the dog and started yelling at the cop about my balls and his dog.

fortunately i didn't have any pot on me. i spent an hour talking to various officers about what happened before i was let go. one chuckled... :jj:

I suppose I'm heartless but is there really a point to awarding a medal or honor to an animal? I mean, what purpose does it serve since the animal has no ability to appreciate it. Does it come with some type of bump in benefits for the handler or whoever is now taking care of it?

The above isn't to say I don't appreciate animals but rather just to say I can't see the point beyond some kind of PR benefits to the military.

Its fucking pathetic that this dog had to be flown from America to London to be awarded for her service to American Troops.

giving a medal to a dog is such a fucking waste of time. Give him a family that loves him and treats for life. He probably doesn't give two shits about the Dickin's Cider medal.
