SAN FRANCISCO — Yelp.com is warning that a California lawsuit targeting critical posts about a law firm could lead to the removal of negative reviews and leave consumers with a skewed assessment of restaurants and other businesses.

Lawyer Dawn Hassell said the business review website is exaggerating the stakes of her legal effort, which aims only to remove from Yelp lies, not just negative statements, that damaged the reputation of her law firm.

Though its impact is in dispute, the case is getting attention from some of the biggest internet companies in the world, which say a ruling against Yelp could stifle free speech online and effectively gut other websites whose main function is offering consumers reviews of services and businesses.

A San Francisco judge determined the posts were defamatory and ordered the company to remove them two years ago, which a second judge and a state appeals court upheld.

Yelp is a shady company that extorts money from businesses to remove obviously false negative reviews. Fuck em.

If they only post glowing reviews, their service is worthless.

This. I go to most of the negs 1st. Then make a call after the pos. ones. But it's not a REAL review site-more like Angies List for those who don't wish to pay.

I guess I should say that it seems every time it gets to court it doesn't meet the legal bar for extortion. But when your business has to have a special page explaining how they aren't extorting people on their website, it makes you think there might be something unsavory happening.

Did we really think that the Internet, and free speech for that matter, was going to stay it was supposed to since its inception?

With all the crybabies and SJWs out there whining about people calling them poopie heads, it was only a matter of time before things got changed for the worse.

Hell in a handbasket, ladies and gents, hell in a handbasket.

A guy that worked at my shop before I got here got fired and posted a negative review as a customer. We've complained to no avail.

    Fuck Yelp.

The previous owner was also signed up for like ~$400/mo or some shit just to put our ad at the top of the search results page and have them "report" to us all the activity people were clicking on. Also, the phone number they post as yours, isn't your number. They say they can track calls for that number better so customers may have a number saved in their phone for your business yet, its not your actual number.

I guess free speech is great unless it negatively impacts trump or whatever worthless business you defend

It's like every day you come here with the goal of looking stupider than the day before, and have exceeded your goal at every attempt.

I have to admit I shop solely based on reviews and I rely on Yelp.

That being said, there is a huge amount of review fraud on the internet and I have no idea how to solve it.
