This is a little out of control though... I pay about $200 a month for cable, plus amazon prime, and netflix, and whatever Roku costs

All so I can watch the cowboys and horns lose football games on the weekend

ESPN has a stranglehold on the video providers. They force the providers to make them a basic service and then charge the highest affiliate/carriage fees in the business. They are the evil WalMart of content providers. Try selling your cable service without them though....

I think that $40 a month figure is for all sports related programming channels, even the regional ones.

ESPN really has gone downhill, too much college softball and reality shows now. They have been cutting costs a lot this past year guess they see the writing on the wall as well.

ESPN is about 80 bucks a year per household to the cable operators. The regionals are in the 35 buck per year range. I would assume that would be all of fox's regionals, not per channel. TNT, TBS, about the same, they go way down from there. FS1 is bundled in with the other Fox national content.

The thing you have to remember is that ESPN gets money from every single customer, whether they watch sports or not. If providers were to go to some ala carte menu, where you choose only the channels you want, ESPN would immediately lose a huge amount of customers. Say half the people choose to keep ESPN under their ala carte menu, ESPN would have to charge 2x the amount that they currently charge, in order to keep their revenue even. Everybody knows this would never work. That's why the providers have refused to do it, even though they have had the technology for many years. It's unfair that non-sports watchers subsidize sports watchers but that's how it works.

If ESPN lost half their revenue, They'd still have the same contracts to fulfill that pay the sports leagues obscene amounts of money. ESPN would have to shut down channels, lay off people, generally lower the quality. Eventually, you'd see them drop out of covering some of the lesser college leagues, maybe hockey, etc.
