Hip, like cool, does not refer to one specific quality. What is considered hip is continuously changing.
I certainly know the difference between you're/your and too/two/to, here/hear and their/they're/there but sometimes when you're typing, I type the word as I hear it in my head and it's the wrong instance of the homophone.
Then I view my post, gasp at my retardation and quickly edit it.
I only do that when texting because of the character limit. The first couple of times I did it, I cringed while doing it, but realized it's necessary for both the character limit and time.
