No, this is actually really interesting.

Zach Braff begged for money, even though he could've gotten money from investors.

But he begged for it from his fans anyways.

Then it turned out, he WAS getting money from private investors...man, that sucks.

Now wealthy celebs are holding regular people hostage for their art. "Fund my movie or you won't get a sequel".

I saw that movie. I wouldn't go to the sequel even if were free.

Zach Braff Backlash Is Misguided And Misinformed

Zach Braff is using Kickstarter to fund his new film, Wish I Was Here. So far, so run-of-the-mill. Braff isnâ€™t the first celebrity to use Kickstarter, nor the first filmmaker, so why is there a backlash? Most of thecomplaints both from the media and commenters seem predicated on the same misunderstandings of Kickstarter, with a few misunderstandings of finance to add spice to the mix. But because so many people are falling into the same traps, I thought it worth going through the objections one by one.
1. Braff got gap financing, so shouldnâ€™t have needed Kickstarter
The objections seem to have picked up speed when Braff announced that he had acquired gap finance from Worldview Entertainment. As Variety explains:
Because the film is scheduled to begin shooting in August, the production wonâ€™t have enough time to get bank loans against foreign pre-sale letters. Worldview essentially backstops those loans, supplementing the dollars raised on Kickstarter, which currently amounts to $2.6 million, and an unspecified sum Braff himself has ponied up.
â€œWorldview may end up providing nothing at the end of the day beyond the gap loan depending on how we do in Cannes,â€ said Stacy Sher, who is producing the film with Michael Shamberg, Braff and his brother Adam Braff.

â€˜Gap financingâ€™ is basically a bridging loan to fill in the financial void between getting a commitment of sales to foreign territories and getting the money from those sales. Explains Braff:
When you pre-sell foreign distribution, you donâ€™t get that money for some time. So you need to go to a company to provide something called â€œGap Financingâ€. They are essentially a bank. Loaning us the â€œgapâ€ between what weâ€™ve raised together and what we need to actually make the movie.

Businesses do bridging loans all the time, for all sorts of reasons, so this isnâ€™t really anything unusual.
2. Braff was offered traditional investment
As well, as securing gap finance, Braff was also offered investment prior to starting the Kickstarter campaign. This is actually the first thing his Kickstarter page addresses:

I was about to sign a typical financing deal in order to get the money to make â€œWish I Was Here,â€ my follow up to â€œGarden State.â€ It would have involved making a lot of sacrifices I think would have ultimately hurt the film.

Rather like with start-ups, you donâ€™t want to bring on board investors who have goals for your film that are at odds with your own. For Braff, that means that he wanted to maintain the creative integrity of the project:
Financing an independent film the traditional way often means having to give away your right to â€œthe final cut,â€ casting choices, location choices and cutting down your script to make it shoot-able on the cheapest budget possible.

I would bet that a fairly hefty percentage of creators on Kickstarter choose to use crowdfunding because of the independence it gives them. Thereâ€™s no need to compromise on your artistic vision: For better or for worse, you are in complete control of your project and it succeeds or fails because of the decisions you make.
There is absolutely no good reason to say that Braff should be excluded from Kickstarter because hecould have got investment. He could have, but if he felt it would be detrimental to his project, why should he?
3. None of Braffâ€™s supporters will get a share of the profits
This is absolutely true and absolutely right. Kickstarter is not a crowd investment platform, it is a place where people give money to a project in exchange for rewards. No project on Kickstarter provides its supporters with a cut of the profits, and nor should they, because thatâ€™s simply not how Kickstarter works. The idea that Braffâ€™s supporters should get some sort of cut of the profits is utter codswallop and shows a clear failure to understand the Kickstarter model.
4. Braff should have used his own money
He is using his own money. Braff hasnâ€™t disclosed his contribution, but he said in a Kickstarter update:
I have said on here and in every interview Iâ€™ve done on this project that the film would be fully financed from three sources: my Kickstarter backers, my own money and pre-selling foreign theatrical distribution. Those three amounts will bring us to a budget of around 5 to 6 million dollars (Â£3.3 million to Â£3.9 million). Nothing about the making of this movie has changed. This movie is happening because backers funded it.

With Kickstarter supplying at least $2.6 mn for a potential $6 mn budget, that means Braff is putting in some fraction of $3.4 mn. How big of a fraction is anyoneâ€™s guess, but we have no reason to doubt that he is using his own money.
However, what if he werenâ€™t? What difference does that make? Heâ€™s still putting in his time, which is in itself an investment because he gets paid nothing if the film flops. Many Kickstarter users come to the site with nothing but a good idea, skills, time, and the passion to make it happen, and people will happily support them. Why should Braff be any different?
5. But Braff is rich! He has contacts!
Apparently Braff is worth $22 mn. But being worth $22 mn doesnâ€™t mean that you have $22 mn sloshing around in your bank account just waiting for you to spend it. And having contacts doesnâ€™t mean easy access to strings-free money. However, even if he was bathing in dollars whilst laughing maniacally, what difference does that make?
Kickstarter is an open platform and anyone can use it so long as they stay within the companyâ€™s terms and conditions. If we value the kind of opportunity that Kickstarter creates for those of us with few resources, then we have to value it for everyone, even those with lots of resources. Anything else is double standards at the very least, censorship at worst.

6. Braff was asking for too much money
How much is too much? Braff asked for $2 mn and has so far raised $2,688,023 from 40,023 backers with three days to go. That’s not a huge amount of money to make a film with and it’s certainly not the most that a Kickstarter project has raised. A project should ask for enough money to complete their project and if they think they need $2 mn, then they can ask for that. They might not get it, but they are free to ask.Again, it’s a double standard to say that Braff asked for too much but that, say, Rob Thomas was right to ask for $2 mn for Veronica Mars. Thomas received $5.7 mn, by the way, over twice what Braff has currently raised.

7. But Braff’s rubbish and his rewards suck
These ‘arguments’, that his perks “aren’t worth it” and that he himself sucks, is the one that most infuriate me. You might not like Zach Braff, and you might think that the rewards he’s offering are sub-par. That’s fine. Not everyone has to like everything, but no one gets to say what other people are allowed to like, or back on Kickstarter.
This project isn’t for people who don’t like Zach Braff, it’s for fans, for people who’ll be delighted to get a chance to ask him a question at an online screening, or a T-shirt, or get to go to an advance screening. Kickstarter gives people a chance to get things that are out of the ordinary, that you can’t just pop down to your local shopping mall and pick up in a two-for-one deal, stuff that’s personal and special. And Braff provides plenty of reasonably priced rewards that really will be treasured by those who receive them.
8. Don’t give your money to Braff, give it to me!
Quite a few complaints seem to centre around the ideas that Braff isn’t ‘independent’ and thus shouldn’t be supported, or that he’s in some way hurting smaller projects by ‘taking away’ funding from them. Neither accusation is true.
Braff’s film has no studio and no distributor. It is being funded by Braff, the public and a loan. That’s about as indie as it gets. It’s irrelevant that Braff’s well-known, he’s still working outside the traditional studio system for this film, which makes it an indie.
As for the idea that Braff’s film is somehow damaging smaller projects, that is predicated on assumptions that past experience with Kickstarter has shown not to be true. In 2012, Kickstarter said:
As we’ve grown, we’ve heard people worry that it will be harder and harder to fund projects as the total number of projects grows. They wonder: Do more projects mean greater competition for the same dollars?
And when there’s a blockbuster project, they ask: Are these projects stealing backers from other worthy projects?
For both questions, the opposite actually appears to be true. Projects aren’t fighting over a finite pool of Kickstarter dollars or backers. One project’s backer isn’t another project’s loss. The backers that one project brings often end up backing other projects as well. Each project is not only promoting itself, but the Kickstarter ecosystem as a whole.

Kickstarter analysed two blockbuster projectsDouble Fine Adventure’s videogame and the Order of the Stick comic reprint drive. Double Fine is estimated to have brought 60,000 new backers into Kickstarter, resulting in a massive jump in pledges from 629 per week to 9,755 per week for other videogame projects. It also prompted a similarly huge increase in the amount of money pledged, some $2,890,704 in just the six weeks after their project completed (and that figure doesn’t include what they raised). What’s more, 22% (13,715) of Double Fine’s new recruits to Kickstarter, went on to pledge $877,171 to 1,266 other projects.
The same happened with the Order of the Stick, which doubled the pledges per made to comics project. Again, there was a bump in new pledges, with 2,455 (22% again) of new recruits pledging $206,766 to 722 projects. Kickstarter says:
Combined, Double Fine and Order of the Stick raised more than $4.5 million, and their first-time backers have pledged another $1,083,937 to 1,000 other projects.

Zach Braff’s project will have a similar effect, bringing in new users and introducing them to other projects on Kickstarter. The big blockbuster projects really are a rising tide that floats all boats.
So all those indie filmmakers who are out theretelling people not to support Braff’s project are, in effect, shooting themselves in the foot. Not only do they look petty and jealous, they are also being very shortsighted because they are, in effect, trying to reduce the number of new Kickstarter users and thus decrease the extra dollars pledged to other film projects using the service. Including, possibly, their own.

Wow what a Bullshit "rebuttal" to critics. Almost every point made was wrong and could easily be defeated.

There has never been an obstacle to Braff incorporating a production company and selling shares of stocks. With shareholders, the profits are returned to the shareholders according to their investment. With "crowdsourcing", the rubes get nothing. It could be a $1B movie and they get nothing. But ole' Zack does.

Braff was at the latest Kimmel party, that's why he'll be on the HSS. Adam Carolla mentioned talking to Braff at the party, said his girlfriend was waaaaaaaay hot & basically said if Braff wasn't rich, there's no way she would be with him.
