Angel Dust is very, very good. But I like Album Of The Year more.

    https://tapeop.com/interviews/128/matt-wallace/

Great interview with Matt Wallace, who produced TRT and AD, plus The Replacements and bunch of other stuff.

“I was with them as they morphed into Faith No More. I did sound for their live show. I was with them when they became a four-piece, before Chuck [Mosely] joined. Then I was with them when they were a four-piece before Mike joined, all the way up through Angel Dust. I was learning as they were learning. We did the first record, We Care a Lot, in six days; recorded and mixed. The band and I slept and recorded in the same room. After that, Chuck was out of the band, and they were looking for a singer. I think Jim Martin [guitar] may have gotten the music to Mike first - he was tuned into Mr. Bungle before I was. A lot has become clear after the fact; Mike Patton was slightly ambivalent about being in the band. His heart was in Mr. Bungle, but he saw an opportunity to be in another band that was further along. I think he decided to join forces on a lark. In some ways, he was never fully committed to Faith No More, but I will say that when he was with us, he was all in. He wrote all those melodies and all those lyrics for The Real Thing in a two-week period”.

That wuss Kiedis couldn’t carry MP’s jockstrap.
The recent Dead Cross project was pretty killer also.

This is Faith No More's only other famous video. They only had 2 famous songs. They were basically a 2-hit wonder.

I love the songs you posted, they also had three other songs that were in heavy rotation on MTV and "Alternative" radio. "We Care A Lot"(with the first singer of the band Chuck, it was also the theme song for a show on The Discovery Channel), "Midlife Crisis", and "Last Cup of Sorrow".

They were bigger than RHCP for a brief time, but went in a less commercial musical direction after "The Real Thing". The Chili Peppers went the opposite way and got really huge with "Blood Sugar Sex Magic".

I always considered RHCP's early stuff to be more Funk-driven, party music and Faith No More was more of a Metal band. So to me, it's apples and oranges.

Apologies for the Patrick Bateman-esque post. :p

don't even dignify that dummy with an answer.

As far as the RHCP. They were once my favourite band in the world. Their first three albums are almost peerless. Then the guitarist died and they put out the AWFUL Mother's Milk and it's been sharply downhill ever since.

I do concede BSSM has some good tunes musically, but the singer is the fucking worst.

yes they blew up on the face of BSSM, but they did it for the price of sucking. Anythign after BSSM is fucking horrendous shite.

Their first three albums still hold up though, particularly Freaky Styley.

I've got no beef with the lawyer, he's nothing but nice to me.

I love their early stuff and BSSM.....as a 90's kid, it was part of the soundtrack and I only became aware of the early stuff through the popularity of that one. I don't fault them on going a different direction with their music for $$$$ and to work with Rick Rubin.....that's a dream come true.

I think Patton is a way better vocalist than Keidis, but I am biased because I think he's one of the best.

The reason the first record was so much different (and IMO better) than the rest is because most of the performances, with the exception of Chris’ vocals, were done by production guys Brendan O’Brien and George Drackoulias. Chris and Rich wrote some really nice tunes, but none of the guys were up to task when it came to recording. After going out on the road and playing those tunes almost every night, they were all more polished musicians by the next go. If you listen to Southern Harmony and Shake Your Money Maker back to back, you can definitely hear it.

Brendan Bud OBrien (?) I think did for Southern Harmony what Dracoulias was able to do for SYMM, pulling out stronger written and sounding material. Him, a ton of touring and the addition of Eddie in the studio and Marc Ford were game changers for this band.

I can’t wait for Gormans book to come out later this year.
