    Greetings friend,
Do you wish to be as cool as me?

Ive decided to start a thread where I list off new albums I think are worth listening to, along with discussions about upcoming releases, live concert clips, ETC.

Basically, a way for me to keep my bad taste in music a little bit more localized.

I am a little behind, so I will start with some of January's' album releases, but only the really good ones...

Steve Gunn: The Unseen in Between (Kind of new folkish)

    Malibu Ken: S/T (hip hop).

Sharon Van Etten: Remind me tomorrow (Indie rock): Seeing her Monday, very excited. Excellent record

Greensky Bluegrass: All for Money (Bluegrass/Jamgrass): Not sure how I feel about this yet. Really contunuing to take further step from traditional bluegrass, but I like their older albums better. Just better songs

Toro y Moi: Outer Peace (chillwave electronic)

James Blake: Assume Form (R&B electro kind of stuff) Big step up from some of his other albums

Night Beats: Myth of a man (psych/garage rock) Softer edges than some of their other work. Less fuzzy. Not sure if its better, but definitely a next step

Better Oblivion Community Center: S/T (Phoebe Bridges from Boygenius and Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) team up. Amazing results)

This band has a heavier Dream Theater sound.

I'm pretty excited for a the new American Sharks release (3/15/19) but as of yet nothing other than this short promo:

For those those that are unfamiliar they kind of sound like The Ramones and Motorhead had a baby.

    Older song for reference:

I’m an Aesop Rock fan, The Impossible Kid was one of the best albums of 2016, but I wasn’t feeling Malibu Ken on my first and only listen. I’ll have to give it another go.

Fuck yeah, I’ve got their self titled album from 2013 and it’s killer, I assumed that they had broken up or something. They got any other releases?

Never heard these guys before. I listened to that first album, and into it.
Discussion and discovery are the name of the game
It grew on me a bit. I'm also into Aesop Rock, and had to reconcile its differences.

    February 8:
Case McCombs: Tip of The Sphere (psych folk kind of). Right now might be my favourite album of the year. Kind of has the Acid heartland vibe that War on Drugs has. Maybe a little more laid back. Really great!

LCD Soundsystem: Electric Lady Sessions (indie electro). Good live album from his time at Electric Lady Studios. I queued it to tonite->home->I want your love. Awesome

Panda Bear: Buoys (weird indie) Panda Bear (who's other band is Animal Collective) is credited for starting the modern indie thing with his 2007 album Person Pitch. Has floated along the same waters since. Definitely worth a listen.

New Trey Anastasio Band (Phish). A live album from his two shows at The Fox Theater in late '17. They sound really good.

TAB is Anastasio's side project, where he experiments with his solo work, covers, and some Phish tunes. The band is completely different, and he incorporates a horn section. Songs are a little more straightforward than Phish, they don't get super out there. Still some good improv, and fun songs

Side note: I have a huge boy/girl thing for Natalie Cressman, one of the women in his horn section

There are parts of this I really liked, but then sometimes it would teeter on the edge of Evanescence or something, who Im not a fan of. I need to look through the rest of their album to see what I think. I looked at Spotify's recommendations if I like Cherry Glazerr, and I do enjoy a handful of those bands.
For some reason, a lot of Sammy's solo work comes off as really dated to me...like, I listen to a lot of older music, but Hagar's sound is so associated with a specific era to my ears. Funny, because I can appreciate a fair amount of Van Halen (who are equally pigeonholed in an era), be it he or Roth.

Not sure if any one here is into free jazz, but this is a pretty decent album.

Angel Bat Dawid: The Oracle (Jazz) Really soothing album by jazz clarinetist Angel Bat Dawid. She is a Chicagoan; a city with some good modern jazz outcroppings. Very eerie and otherworldly sounding; reverb heavy, and almost psychedelic at times. Worth a listen if you are into spiritual sounding jazz.
