This was only two years earlier, but I hope it counts.

It was always a personal favourite of mine.

They kept reinventing themselves. There were two distinctive phases before "Saturday Night Fever." There was this phase above, with the exception of "Jive Talkin." Then around 74 and 75, you had the phase with such songs as "Jive Talkin" "Nights on Broadway" "Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)" and "You Should Be Dancing"

The Saturday Night Fever thing pretty much happened by accident. It was their own fault for being so prolific. They didn’t even get involved until the movie was almost finished... the producers had planned to use Motown stuff and one of Boz Scaggs’ tunes and then couldn’t get clearance for some of them. They asked the Gibbs to come up with some tunes and they threw a bunch of them together without even really knowing much about the movie.

And then John Travolta somehow got a piece of the soundtrack sales. Now he has a plane in his driveway.

He also has a piece of the Grease Soundtrack (as does Olivia Newton John). So even when he wasn't getting a big payday in the 80's, he was still making major bank off of those 2 albums alone.

He sang on the Grease soundtrack so that makes more sense. The only justification I can see for him having a piece of the SNF soundtrack profits is that his picture was on the album cover.

That being said, I'd question whether he really made "major bank" of either in the 80s, when you hear about the actual singers and writers getting royalty checks for a few dollars or pennies on big albums.

And they produced THE seminal disco album under those conditions.

It takes real talent to do that.

I was watching a rerun of Later with Jools Holland very recently and Barry was one of the guests. He performed To Love Somebody and it was really well done. His son is a guitarist in his backing band and you would have no idea they are related. I’d guess he’s around 35 or 40, all tatted up and looks like he belongs in a metal band.

The Bee Gees were fucking awesome. Barry Gibb one of the most talented songwriters to walk this planet. With Robin and Maurice now gone, and Barry an old man, this video is so poignant.
