No. Howard lifted his entire act from Steve Dahl. Howard was never #1 in the Chicago market, they already had their own “Stern”.

If you have an hour to kill, have a look at this Steve Dahl comedy special that aired on WMAQ Chicago back in 1979. You can really see how much '80s Stern act was, shall we say, "influenced" heavily by Dahl.

Only two-thirds from Steve Dahl. The last one-third from Bob Grant.

Howard was so innovative he changed it to "what's wrong with this guy's phone?" That's just who Howard is and he's being Howard. The work ethic is insane.

There were quite a few shock jocks before Howard although none reached the same level of success or compensation. Steve Dahl was well known, along with Imus, but there were others too like Moby (who started his career in the early 1970's in Nashville) or maybe even ManCow. I first heard Moby when I moved to Houston in the 1980's, when I also heard with Stevens & Pruett for the first time. Both Moby and Stevens & Preutt were stars on KLOL radio for the first decade I lived there.

No. Charles Laquidara on WBCN ruled the Boston airwaves with The Big Mattress radio show while Howard was attending Boston University. Howard has said several times he dreamed of getting a show on WBCN. And Howard's King Schmaltz Bagel Hour college radio show was a poor ripoff of WBCN's King Biscuit Flower Hour.
